Three Articles, Three Jobs
English has three articles: a, an, and the. Getting them right is tricky — many languages don’t have articles at all. But the logic is simple once you see the pattern.
Introducing something new. The listener doesn’t know which one yet.
Both speaker and listener know which specific thing.
Any one example of something.
Only one exists in context.

When NOT to use any article
Use the when you could point at a specific thing and both you and the listener know exactly which one. “Pass me the salt” — both of you can see THE salt on the table. “I want some salt” — any salt will do → no “the”. If you can both point at the same thing, use the.
