📌 Three Articles, Three Jobs

English has three articles: a, an, and the. Getting them right is tricky — many languages don’t have articles at all. But the logic is simple once you see the pattern.

A / AN — first mention

Introducing something new. The listener doesn’t know which one yet.

I saw a dog in the park. (any dog)
THE — second mention

Both speaker and listener know which specific thing.

The dog was huge! (same dog)
A / AN — one of many

Any one example of something.

She’s a teacher. (one of many teachers)
THE — unique things

Only one exists in context.

The sun / the moon / the internet

🔧 A vs AN — sound rule

A or AN? — listen to the SOUND, not the letter
a+ consonant SOUND
a cat · a university · a European · a one-way street
an+ vowel SOUND
an apple · an hour · an honest man · an MBA
⚠️ “university” starts with U but sounds like “you” (consonant) → a university. “hour” starts with H but the H is silent → an hour.

When NOT to use any article

Plural generalizations
Dogs are friendly. (all dogs)
Uncountable generalizations
I love music. (music in general)
Most names (people, cities, countries)
London, Poland, Anna
Languages, sports, meals
speak English, play tennis, have breakfast
💡 Memory Hack
The “pointing finger” rule for THE

Use the when you could point at a specific thing and both you and the listener know exactly which one. “Pass me the salt” — both of you can see THE salt on the table. “I want some salt” — any salt will do → no “the”. If you can both point at the same thing, use the.
