📌 Imaginary Situations

The Second Conditional talks about imaginary, unreal or unlikely situations. It’s the “what if” tense — for dreams, hypothetical advice, and situations that are not true right now.

Imaginary present

Things that aren’t true now.

If I had more time, I ‘d travel more. (I don’t have time)
Unlikely future

Possible but very unlikely.

If I won the lottery, I ‘d buy a yacht.
Advice

What you would do in someone’s situation.

If I were you, I ‘d apologise.
Dreams

Fantasising about a different life.

If I could fly, I ‘d visit every country.

🔧 Formula

Structure
If+Past Simple, subject+would (‘d)+base verb
Special: “If I were you…” — were is used for ALL persons (formal/standard). “If I was” is accepted in informal speech.

⚡ First vs Second — the KEY difference

If I find a job, I ‘ll move out. (1st)
Real — I might actually find a job
If I found a job, I ‘d move out. (2nd)
Unlikely — I probably won’t find one
💡 Memory Hack
Past tense = distance from reality

Using Past Simple in the if clause doesn’t mean “past time” — it means distance from reality. The further the grammar is from the present, the further from reality the situation is. Present Simple (1st conditional) = close to reality. Past Simple (2nd conditional) = further from reality. Past Perfect (3rd conditional) = completely in the past, can’t change it.
